 Vaccinations                                           No Description

We have kept up-to-date with new guidelines and recommendations from experts such as Dr. Richard Ford, and the AAHA panel on vaccinations and vaccines for dogs and cats.

Puppy Shot Series (core vaccines except rabies)---Begin  the series at 6 to 8 weeks old, then get boosters every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 to 17 weeks old.  If vaccinations are not started until a later age, then get a series of at least two vaccinations, 3 to 4 weeks apart, with the second one at least 16 weeks of age.  Rabies vaccinations are given at about 16 to 17 weeks of age.  Only one rabies vaccination is required until the next year.

Kitten Shot Series(core vaccines except rabies)---Begin the series at 7 to 9 weeks old, and get boosters every 4 weeks until 16 to 17 weeks old.

Core Vaccines for dogs are rabies, canine distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus type II (hepatitis), and parainfluenza.  Core vaccines for cats are rabies, feline distemper (panleukopenia), rhinotracheitis, and calicivirus.  Optional additional vaccines for dogs are leptospirosis, bordetella, lyme disease, and others.  Optional additional vaccines for cats are feline leukemia, chlamydia, and others.

Vaccine Safety---We do not overvaccinate, and we use the safest vaccines.   We offer three year vaccines, if they are available, and discuss the option with clients.  We give feline leukemia vaccine only to outdoor cats, or indoor cats exposed to outdoor cats.  We use injections sites on cats that are recommended by the panel.  We recommend leptospirosis vaccines (the new 4-way lepto) for outdoor dogs, and we have seen very few vaccine reactions to this lepto vaccine.

Booster Vaccinations---A year after the initial puppy or kitten shot series, boosters of core vaccines should be given, in addition to any optional vaccinations that were given.  Two years after the initial vaccine series, core vaccines can be given at either one or three year intervals, depending on the type of vaccine given, although optional vaccines such as feline leukemia, bordetella, and leptospirosis should be given yearly.
